Franklin Barreto call-up no. 1

Susan Slusser says Chad Pinder's going to the disabled list and Franklin Barreto will take his place. This move will be in addition to adding Trayce Thompson to the roster while sending down Daniel Gossett. Pinder was the only backup infielder on the roster, so with him injured, if the A's didn't want to make a 40-man move, the only other option in the minors was Jorge Mateo. Since Barreto's been here before, he's the obvious choice.

Pinder was getting playing time as a platoon outfielder, which should now become Thompson's role. Barreto seems likely to be more of a pure backup, maybe getting a start or two to give Jed Lowrie, Marcus Semien, or Matt Chapman a rest in what should hopefully just be a 10-day stay until Pinder is ready to come back. (Barreto's never actually played third base as a professional, but if you want to run with an eight-man bullpen, you take your lumps on the bench.) Given the Lowrie-Semien-Chapman setup, this was always going to be Barreto's lot until someone gets traded or hurt.
